    We have homework most nights, usually a math sheet, reading 15 minutes, and a

    Words Their Way (WTW) activity.

    Homework not handed in the following day will be worked on during recess.

     There is no more WTW 





















    4th Grade Curriculum


    We have 3 NYS examinations in 4th grade: ELA, math and science. We will prepare throughout the school year using exams from previous years and by completing parallel tasks in class. This year, state exams tenatively will be given on the following dates:

    ELA:  April 3rd and 4th

    Math:  May 6th and 7th

    Science Performance: Week of May 22nd - 31st

    Science Written: June 3rd

     I am happy to announce that we will be starting a new Reading and Writing program called Readygen. This program comes with amazing reading material for all levels. It's also accessable from the computer so we'll have lots of opportunity to use our new interactive TVs.


    Reading-  The emphasis on 4th grade reading is to read for information and learning. We will read texts that provide facts and background knowledge that will challenge students. Students will be asked questions that can be found by refering to the pages that they have read. This will be taught by  group lesson and small groups so that each child is exposed to 4th grade reading material and reading material at their reading level. We read a mixture of non-fiction and fictional stories. There is reading homework every night.  


    Writing - We will be focusing on three different kinds of writing this year. This will cover writing opinion pieces on topics or texts, while supporting a point of view with reasons and informationWriting informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly. Writing narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences . This will cover exciting writing topics, specific writing skills, and social studies topics. We will us pen and paper as well as our Google Cromebooks. 


    Spelling- The HCS Elementary uses Words Their Way. This program will match up individualized spelling lists to the needs and strengths of each student. This program will help student learn about spelling patterns and not put focus on "learning" a list of words each week. Once students understand a pattern they will be able to apply it to other words and in their reading and writing. Students will be tested on these words using the Chromebooks. This helps students learn the pattern and not just learn words for a test. There will be spelling homework for each new pattern as well as classroom practice.




    In an effort to line up with New York State Standards and testing, we are now using a rubric grading system.  Students will receive a grade ranging from N-4 as shown in the key below:

    Classroom Dojo 


    Our classroom uses "Classroom Dojo" as a means of communication from school to home. "Classroom Dojo" is a safe way for teachers to communicate with parents. As a parent you will get to enjoy our Classroom story and see pictures and/or videos of your child. You can see how your child did in the classroom that day, that week, that month. Did they gain points for participating, staying on task, or working hard? Did they lose points for not having their homework or talking too much? You can receive and send messages to me through "Classroom Dojo" too. 


    Classroom Dojo has been very useful to the parents who have used it. I would like to encourage all parents to give it a try. We are always posting pictures and we send most of our important messages on this.  


    Common Core State Standards



    The Common Core Learning Standards for ELA identify 6 shifts in learning for students.  These shifts are supported in the classroom and can also be supported at home by working with your child in the following areas:

    1. Read as much non-fiction as fiction.

    2. Learn about the world by reading.

    3. Read more challenging material closely.

    4. Discuss reading using evidence.

    5. Write non-fiction using evidence.

    6. Increase academic vocabulary.




    The Common Core Learning Standards for mathematics identify three areas of focus:

    1. Developing understanding and fluency with multi-digit multiplication, and developing understanding of dividing to find quotients involving multi-digit dividends

    2. Developing an understanding of fraction equivalence, addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators, and multiplication of fractions by whole numbers

    3. Understanding that geometric figures can be analyzed and classified based on their properties, such as having parallel sides, perpendicular sides, particular angle measures, and symmetry.

    4th graders show Tanager Pride every day by:

    3. Being ready to learn

    Tanager Pride Parties will be held throughout the year to congratulate those students who meet our Tanager Pride expectations each day. Please check the Document Manager to the left to see what students must do to be eligible for the Tanager Pride parties.
