Over 56 teams comprised of 400 students representing 19 school districts competed in the annual WSWHE BOCES Battle of the Books on Monday, March 9 at SUNY Adirondack.

The four teams prepared for the competition for several months, starting by reading the ten books (5 fiction/5 non-fiction) assigned by WSWHE BOCES event organizers. The students then spent several months being quizzed by grades 3-5 coach, Mrs. Monica Pollack, School Library Media Specialist; and 6th grade coach, Mrs. Suszyne Burch, 6th grade teacher. The questions ranged from the plot to the dedication of the book.
During the competition the students had 20 seconds to answer a recall question, responding in the form of author and title. Each grade level competition is set up in a bracket system, and a first, second, third, and fourth place teams are determined in the end.
Hartford’s 3rd and 5th grade teams advanced to the semi-final round and finished in fourth place.
