Changes for 2008 - 2009

A huge welcome to our new faculty members:

  • Mr. Steve Frampton - Middle School English
  • Ms. Bonnie Naumann - High School English
  • Ms. Trisha Stewart - Agricultural Science

We are very excited to welcome you into the HCS community and wish you only success during your tenure with the district.

The building project is moving right along as we finalize preparations for the start of the 2008-2009 school year. While the facility is still in disarray, we have been assured that the building will be "occupyable" for September. However, with renovation project there will be a couple of changes for the upcoming year. First, when we start the school year, there will be no lockers in the main hallways on the first or second floor of the Middle/High School due to delays with the manufacturer. As a result, we have created an alternative plan to accommodate all students until the new lockers can be installed:

  • 6th Grade students will not be issued lockers to begin the school year
  • Students in grades 7 - 9 will be issued lockers in the Middle/High School (the lockers will be located in the music hallway and near the gymnasium)
  • Sophomores will be issued lockers in the Technology building
  • Juniors and Seniors will be using the varsity lockers in the locker rooms

Again, this is just a temporary situation until the new lockers can be installed into the main hallways, at which time we will reevaluate the situation and reassign lockers, as needed.

Bell Schedule - the bell schedule for the 2008 - 2009 school year has been changed (please see the link for the full document). You will notice that the start time has not been altered and school will still begin at 8:00a.m. However, the school day will now end at 2:30p.m. and the time schedule for each period has been changed to create consistency throughout the schedule.

Office Relocation - Many of the district's offices will soon be relocated.

  • The Main office of the Middle/High School will be moved to the old entranceway near the former District office and is scheduled to be functional by Columbus Day.
  • The Nurse's office will be moved across the hall from it's previous location and should be ready by the time school starts.
  • The new Superintendent's office will be moved into the 'old' High School Principal's office and be open in January of 2009. Until then, the Superintendent's office remains in the trailor outside the Technology building.

Visitor's Entrance - When school begins in September, the vistor's entrance procedure will remain the same as it was when school ended in June. All visitors will enter through the Main Doors on the bus circle where they will be greeted, asked to sign-in, and then directed toward their destination. However, once the new Main High School Office is available (scheduled for October), there will be a new visitor's entrance and entrance procedure in place. All entry doors to the school will be locked and all visitors, and those students who arrive late to school, will be asked to enter through the new entranceway for the Main office in the Middle/High School. Upon entering the building you will be asked to sign-in and then directed to your appropriate destination. In addition, all visitors for the Elementary school will entrance via this means as well, until the new Elementary office entrance way is completed (Summer of 2009).

Interscholastic Athletic Guide - Over the summer there has been a change in the district's "Interscholastic Atheletic Guide." In reference to student attendance, the new policy reads: "The attendance office will maintain a daily list of those students who were absent for all or part of the school day. Student-Athletes are expected to be in attendance by 10:00a.m. each day in order to participate. Any student who arrives after the 10:00a.m. curfew, leaves school early, or is absent for the entire day will be ineligible to participate in any activity that day, including practices, scrimmages, and games, unless their tardiness/absence corresponds with the district's attendance policy. According to the School Board Policy #405, the only legal excuses from school are: illness or injury, health examination (including doctor and dentist visits), previously approved educational activities, a family emergency (i.e. death in the family), a religious activity, natural disaster, and/or quarantine. The Middle/High School Principal and Director of Athletics will work cooperatively in reviewing any absence/tardy, and ALL absences/tardies must be accompanied by an appropriate note (i.e. doctor's visit must have a note from the doctor's office). In addition, students who spend the day, or part of the day, in A.L.C. or O.S.S. are not allowed to participate.

Basketball Season Passes - We are now offering new discounted "Season Passes" for 2008 - 2009 the basketball season. These passes are available in the district office and are open for any individual to purchase. Please contact Mrs. Durling in the Superintendent's office at 632.5222 for additional information and/or purchase.

New Board Policies

Add/Drop Policy

Students will only be allowed to drop a course (yearlong or semester courses) within the first three weeks of course's start date. Prior to the 'drop,' approval from the student's parent/guardian, teacher, guidance counselor, and principal is needed.
No student will be allowed to drop a course after the three-week time period has elapsed.

Doubling Up Policy

Any high school student, who fails a core course, will be required to repeat that course during the following academic year. Students are not allowed to "double-up" on courses until their senior year (i.e. a student will not be allowed to enroll in English 9 and English 10 at the same time). The only exception to this policy will be the physical education course, which will immediately be "doubled up."

In an effort to help students determine what courses are appropriate for their individual needs, the middle/high school faculty has created a curriculum guide that clearly explains: the course's curriculum, requirement, and the skills that the student will need in order to be successful in the order.

Academic Ineligibility Policy

According to the Board of Education Policy #527: All students who are failing two or three courses are placed on academic probation and must attend extra help sessions in the classes they are failing, and complete the academic re-eligibility form in order to attend and/or participate in any extracurricular activities (i.e. practices, athletic games, concerts, and dances). The extra help sessions are traditionally held on Tuesday, Wednesday, and/or Thursday afternoons from 2:40p.m. - 3:10p.m., however, students may make alternate arrangements with their teachers (i.e. during lunch or a study hall) if needed.

Those students who are failing four or more courses are deemed academically ineligible, and while encouraged to attend extra help sessions, are prohibited from attending or participating in any extracurricular activities until the next five week grading cycle.

If you have any questions regarding this policy please contact Mrs. Harrington or Mr. Cook.
